Famous Monster Spotlight: Dave Hampton
Dave HamptonKnown for his solutions and quality support of artists and their music, Dave Hampton credits Monster products for helping to keep his guarantees. Upon his recent refurbishing of Prince's Paisley Park, Dave outfitted all the facility's studios with Monster Power. "I use Monster products because it is the foundation for creating a consistent, efficient electronic environment for computers and other professional audio equipment." Since using Monster for 15 years, Hampton now introduces all his clients to Monster products.

For over 20 years, Dave has contributed to the success of many top artists like BabyFace, Herbie Hancock and Prince. Through his company MATK Corp (www.davehampton.com), he specializes in dedicated support services for all entertainment related activities.

After early training in electronics and a course of study in Electronic Music and Recording at Cal State University Dominguez Hills, Hampton worked at Oberheim Electronics where he acquired an in-depth knowledge of analog circuitry from Tom Oberheim himself. During this period he also began working as an independent engineer, technician, and sound editor.

When the rising demand for home studios began, Dave played a significant role in educating artists as to the capabilities of defining their own creative spaces. He designed, built and modified studios for the likes of Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Rafael Sadiq, Maxwell, Jonathan Butler, and Organized Noyze, to name a few. On the other hand, Dave's expertise allowed him to also design and build large format studios for Creflo Dollar and World Changers Ministries, Babyface, and Marcus Miller, as well as the recent restoration of Paisley Park Studios for Prince.

He has designed touring rigs for live concerts to include custom instrument modification for touring musicians like the band Chicago, and solo artists Maxwell and Whitney Houston. He has been pivotal in the production and engineering of projects for Grammy-winning artists Herbie Hancock and Marcus Miller. In fact, in the year 2000, he was the first engineer to use Pro Tools to mix a live concert show when Herbie Hancock toured Europe and performed entirely in surround sound.

The new release of Hampton's book, So, You're An Audio Engineer... Well, Here's the Other Stuff You Need to Know (www.soyoureanaudioengineer.com) has catapulted Dave into the new world of authorship. In his book, he discusses issues like knowing your worth, finding your rate, troubleshooting, and building relationships in the Entertainment Industry. It makes a way for Dave to share his experience in the industry and help others have a long-lasting career as well.

Besides designing, writing, consulting, collegiate lectures and appearances, Dave is currently working on a project called "SurroundLab" with long time production partner, Khaliq Glover. Since their success co-producing and engineering the music for Herbie Hancock's Future 2 Future DVD release, the two are focused on bringing great music to the next level by mixing in 5.1 surround sound.
